In April 2006, the UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) began with the aim of heightening educational links between India and the UK. In the last five years, UKIERI has played a pivotal role in solidifying the educational relations between the two countries. The initiative has been successful in covering all segments of the education sector by working with universities, colleges, schools and technical institutions.
In recognition of these substantial achievements and building on the success of the initiative, the programme has been extended for another five years from 2011 - 2016. The extension was announced by the UK Prime Minister Mr. David Cameron and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in July 2010. The programme will provide opportunities for professional and leadership development of schools, higher education institutions and vocational institutions, support partnerships, develop student mobility and skills development programmes.
This new phase of the programme comprises of four strands of education collaboration, covering:
- Building a new generation of leaders
- Innovation partnerships
- Skills development
- Enhancing mobility
