Q. What is Books on Holiday all about?
A. Please click the “Activity Details” tab below the British Council logo on the home page.
 
Q. Is this activity only for British Council library members?
A. No, Books on Holiday is open for all. We will kick-off the activity by distributing these books to library members in all our centres but after that a book can be passed on to just about anyone including non-members. You can also be a part of this activity by rating, commenting, and tracking the various books online even if you are not a part of any of the book chains.
 
Q. How can I view the complete list of 50 books?
A. Please click the “Browse Books” tab below the British Council logo on the home page.
 
Q. I have just received one of the books, what do I have to do next?
A. Please follow the instructions given below
  • Enter your book code in the "Get Started Now" section on the Home Page
  • Enter some basic details about yourself and click submit
  • Confirm your location in the Google Maps pop-up or drag and place the pin at the right location and click submit
  • You are now a part of the book chain
  • Do tell us what you thought about the book by rating and commenting on it
 
Q. How can I comment on a book?
A. Commenting on a book is easy. Just follow the steps below
  • Search for the book of your choice
  • Click on the book you want to comment on
  • Scroll down to the comment box and type your comment
  • Click on submit
 
Q. How can I rate a book?
A. Rating a book is easy. Just follow the steps below
  • Search for the book of your choice
  • Click on the book you want to comment on
  • Click on the 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' icons
 
Q. How can I track a book online?
A. Tracking a book is easy. If you want to track a book chain that you are part of, follow the steps below
  • Enter your email ID in the search box in the top right hand corner
  • Choose the book chain that you want to view

  • Find the book of your choice through the search box in the top right hand corner
  • Choose the originating city from the dropdown menu
 
Q. Do I need to register on the website to comment on or rate a book?
A. No, you don’t need to register on the website to comment on or rate any book.
 
Q. Can I pass the book to someone outside the city or the country?
A. Yes, you can pass the book to someone outside your city or country.
 
Q. For how long can I keep a book with me?
A. To ensure that more and more people can become a part of these book chains we will appreciate it if you can pass the book on after 15 days.
 
Q. How were these 50 books chosen for the list?
A. This list has been compiled by employees of the British Council who have considerable expertise in contemporary literature.
 
Q. How can I see the longest chain?
A. You can find some of the longest chains on the home page in “The Longest Book Chains” section.
 
Q. How can I see the top books as rated by users of the website?
A. The top 5 books based on user rating can be found in the “Top Rated Books” section on the home page.
 
Q. Where can I send feedback about the activity?
A. You can get in touch with us through the Contact Us section.
 
Q. Site search is not showing the desired results. What are the tips for me?
A. Try the following
  • Make sure all words are spelled correctly
  • Try different keywords
  • Try more general words
 
Q. I am unable to locate my area on the map. What do I do?
A. We are using Google Maps for graphically plotting the various book chains online and most of the areas are part of its database. In case you are unable to locate your area then please place the pin at an approximate location which represents the area best according to you.
 
Q. What do I do if I am not able to pass the book to anyone?
A. We are sure that you will find many takers when you want to pass on a book as our list includes some of the best contemporary literature in the world across genres. In case you are unable to pass on the book, then do make it a point to return it to your nearest centre.
 
Q. Why do you need my personal details like Name, Address, Email and Phone Number during registration?
A. We respect your privacy and the information collected from you will not be shared with any third party. Books on Holiday is an attempt at linking people through book chains and there are some exciting prizes to be won for some lucky members of the longest chains. We need these details to get in touch with you in case you are one of the lucky winners.
